Property is a social relationship. Whoever is the owner of something determines who will be excluded from using this thing. Here are a few ideas of how to shape ownership relations from a commons perspective:
- Everything is technically appropriable but some things -- work, land, knowledge -- should be considered ineligible for appropriation.
- Common property may be a form of private property, but it is not individual property.
- Possession of a resource is different from property and ownership, or "dominium." Possession breaks Property. [DB: ??]
- Long-lasting common property regimes require Individual possession (use rights). [DB: would be helpful to have an explanation for this.]
- Commons need to own themselves.
